Chiropractic Services

Here at Miami Valley Spine and Joint, we practice a variety of chiropractic methods. Our goal is to provide an evidence-based alternative to drugs and surgery using nothing more than our hands, diagnostic capabilities, and a great balance of exercise and nutrition.
Chiropractic adjustments are primarily performed at Miami Valley Spine and Joint using a hands-on approach. The reason for performing an adjustment is to improve joint proprioception (motion) or free up areas of restricted mobility within the joints of the spine and extremities. This lack of motion within a joint can lead to various issues ranging from painful movement patterns, dysfunctional movement patterns, and altered nervous system activity.
The adjustment can be performed using various techniques. These can range from the quick, low impulse thrusts, which most people associate with chiropractic, to specific tables and instrument assisted soft tissue adjustments. Every patient at Miami Valley Spine and Joint is unique, and because of this, not everyone receives or needs the same types of adjustments. Applying these specific adjustments to the joints of the body allows for improved biomechanics, altered tissue resistance, improved mechanoreceptors, optimal nerve function, and frequently results in decreased pain with improvement in joint range of motion.

Clinical Care

Our clinical care entails thorough examination by our doctors to find the problem, diagnose it, and resolve it. Sometimes this may cause necessity for further studies such as imaging; however, evidence shows that is rarely recommended. We provide the best in chiropractic care techniques, soft tissue manipulation and mobilization, along with supplementary modalities.

 Reaching Maximal Medical Improvement

While patients often have a misunderstanding about being tied to chiropractic care for long periods of time, Miami Valley Spine and Joint is dedicated to treating patients and helping them reach their desired maximal medical improvement. Patients are never pressured into unnecessary maintenance or care plans but are welcomed back for follow-up care whenever needed at their earliest convenience. Miami Valley Spine and Joint measures patients’ outcomes on three criteria: pain/dysfunction, activity of daily living function, and performance.

“Patients who saw a chiropractor as their initial provider for low back pain (LBP) had 90% decreased odds of both early and long-term opioid use or surgical intervention.

Active Release Technique (ART)

Active Release Techniques (ART) soft tissue treatment is a manual/exercise therapy administered by licensed professionals to specific soft tissue structures throughout the body. The ART soft tissue management system is based on scientific evidence that muscles, nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue develop adhesions within and between them as a result of various injuries. These include acute (sudden injury), repetitive motion (micro-trauma), cumulative (chronic injury) and pressure (due to poor posture/ergonomics). These adhesions cause the motion of muscles or joints to be altered, resulting in a wide variety of symptoms, including pain, weakness, reduced range of motion, numbness, and/or tingling.

Dr. Lanning is proudly, currently, the only doctor in the Dayton area that is an ART Elite Provider. ART Elite Corporate Solutions® is the ground-breaking concept that corporations, both large and small, can actively reduce the lost time and expense of workplace injury by treating the problem before it becomes recordable. We do this by providing soft tissue injury care on site, or at the convenience of the company, for employees with repetitive and cumulative soft tissue injuries or job requirements. By treating the injury and taking preventative measures, this corporate solution can save the company thousands on health care costs and is OSHA approved. If you or someone you know thinks this would be beneficial to your company, please have the safety representative reach out to Miami Valley Spine and Joint.

Dry Needling

Dry Needling is the process of using a needle for trigger point therapy and myofascial pain syndromes. The basic principle is to use the same needle as acupuncture but just in a different vector. There is no electrical stimulation or movement with the needles during this process. During this procedure, a sterile, very thin, solid filament needle is inserted into tissue that may be associated with one or a number of your complaints. One or a number of needles may be used, and the procedure may be performed during more than one office visit. The number of needles and the frequency of the procedure will depend entirely on your condition at each office visit.

NormaTec Recovery System

Miami Valley Spine and Joint uses NormaTec Recovery Systems to enhance blood flow and speed recovery to injuries of the limbs The NormaTec PULSE Massage Pattern is a chambered compression system that employs three key techniques—pulsing, distal release, and gradients—all to maximize your recovery. Common benefits of the NormaTec Recovery System include lessened pain sensitivity, increase in range of motion, clearing of metabolites passively to help with blood lactate levels, decrease in muscle fatigue after acute bouts of exercise, improvement in endothelial blood flow restoration, which in turn are all solutions for delayed on-set muscle soreness (DOMS), with pulse compression.

Graston/Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Manipulation (IASTM)

Graston Technique or IASTM therapy is successful in effectively treating all soft tissue conditions, whether they are chronic, acute, or post-surgical. Most injuries that can benefit from Graston or IASTM are common occurrences, such as performing an activity in too quickly in a short period of time after a long period of not performing that activity. The unique technique and instruments enable the treatment of scar tissue and fascial restrictions during rehabilitation, which allows for faster healing and greater success when the goal is restoring range of motion, eliminating pain, and restoring normal function.

Mackenzie Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy

“The McKenzie Method is a biopsychosocial system of musculoskeletal care emphasizing patient empowerment and self-treatment. This system of diagnosis and patient management applies to acute, subacute and chronic conditions of the spine and extremities. It offers a reliable and practical approach that focuses on “what patients need” and not on “what therapists want to do”. The McKenzie Method of MDT gives patients control of their pain and empowers them to get back to the life they love.”

~Robin Mackenzie

Spinal Decompression Therapy

For those patients who do not respond to traditional chiropractic care or need a little more than just chiropractic services, Spinal Decompression Therapy would be a great option. Spinal Decompression Therapy involves stretching the spine, using a traction table or similar motorized device, with the goal of relieving back pain and/or leg pain. This procedure is called nonsurgical-decompression therapy (as opposed to surgical spinal decompression, such as laminectomy and microdiscectomy).

Rehabilitation and Physical Therapy

In combination to our chiropractic services, Miami Valley Spine and Joint believes in Newtons first law of motion: an object in motion stays in motion, and an object at rest stays at rest. Therefore, patients can expect to receive rehabilitation exercises and physical therapy as part of their treatment plan to help expedite the healing process to return them to maximal medical improvement. These exercises are tailored to each individual and are performed in the office under the supervision of the doctor.

Sport or Work Physicals

In the state of Ohio, chiropractors are required to pass vigorous state and national boards to hold the title of Physician status. In thanks to that status, we are able to offer physicals for all ages whether it be required for school sports or job performance. The only physical we are currently unable to offer is Ohio Department of Transportation physicals, due to the certifications required to perform these physicals. Please check back for when ODOT physicals will be offered.

Nutritional Counseling

Nutrition counseling is an ongoing process in which Miami Valley Spine and Joint health professionals work with an individual to assess his or her daily dietary intake and identify areas where change is needed. This is done to promote better health and manage pain. Certain pains/diseases can arise solely from lack of specific dietary needs. If you have questions on our nutritional services, please schedule an appointment specific to discussing these needs.
